Core Stability
After years of exercise classes, fitness fads and various workout routines in which the
emphasis has been on acquiring high levels of aerobic fitness, the fitness industry and
related research units now recognise and highly promote the benefits of what is called
'core stability'.
The importance of this has been recognised for centuries by practitioners of martial arts
and yoga, and has long been used and understood by dancers and Pilates teachers.
So what is core stability? Well you don't build a house unless you have a perfectly solid
foundation on which to build it on. Our 'core' muscles are basically our foundation on which
the rest of our fitness whether its aerobic, strengthening or muscle toning is built around.
It is our primary source of balance, posture and overall body strength , therefore it deserves
our time and attention. It is also a very satisfying way to work out. The exercises require
quiet concentration and simple (but sometimes surprisingly hard) moves in which to engage and
improve our core muscles.
For this I use a small variety of equipment....a Swiss Ball (great big ball you sit or lie on),
a wobble board (great fun) and your own body and balance.
